The spider currently living on a web between one of the wrought-iron chairs and the house on the back deck. No, I'm not afraid of spiders; the eat stuff I hate.

And, yes, I know, spiders are NOT insects. They are arachnids. But there is no arachnid category any more than there is a fungus category. Yes, I took biology. Yes, I know I'm a nerd.

what is the name of that spider???
I'm fairly sure it's a Bruennich's Agriope, or 'Arachnia bruennichi' in Latin.
Thank you! I will look it up, Ive seen that pattern in the web before, the zig zag part, either on a dvd or in a book, Im not sure if it was just this species and I cannot remember exactly why they do this, but I will go and look it up now...

Out of interest, roughly, how big is that spider, its hard to tell as there isnt any comparison in the pic
hmm this is interesting, there are a number of theories as to the zig zag pattern in orb webs, one of which is perhaps to make the spider appear bigger or more visible... another theory is that it is used to reflect ultraviolet light to attract insects, which I think is quite plausable...

Whip Spiders are pretty fasinating, actually I think they are something between a spider and a scorpion (no sting in tail, but segmented abdomen and two of the legs have evolved into long feelers)

They are very teritorial, and if two equally sized ones meet they will fight, me and my girlfriend saw this on dvd and it freaked us the fuck out...

Anyway, turns out there has been a recent mystery influs of the Bruennichi Agriope into the UK!
Ugh, whip spiders are creepy....I'm glad they don't hang out in Tennessee. Most spiders don't creep me out, unless they're in my hair or something.

Now that I look closer at a reference book, it says Bruennichi's are native to Europe, but it doesn't say the United States, so maybe this is a Black and Yellow Agriope...they're listed as native to the U.S. and Canada.

You seem really into insects.
He's almost 2.5 inches long, or tall, or however you'd like to measure him. I just went outside and measured him; he's STILL there! :D So I guess he's my little buddy now.

But, I swear, his markings look like they've changed a little bit from the picture....
lol, yes I am! I dont get enough time to study them between work and my other hobby music... but whenever I can I read up on them and try to watch as many wildlife documentaries as I can!
Spiders creep me out. You're lucky you're not freaked out by them, I don't think I could get close enough to something like that and take pictures of it. *Shivers*

But, I do however like this image. Even if it does creep me out >.>;
